A really lovely example of a French papier-mâché doll in wonderful small size and wearing her fabulous 1830s costume.
This sweet little doll measures 7.5" tall. She has a papier-mâché shoulder head with a delicately painted face and short hair style with wisps and curls.
Her papier-mâché shoulder head is in good condition with a few very minor cracks. Her beautifully shaped body is cloth which is very firmly stuffed and remains sturdy. her hands are the early wooden hands generally found on the 18th century carton moule dolls.
We would date this doll at around 1830, her manor of construction shows she was made during the transition between the early carton moule and the slightly later papier-mâché (Pauline dolls). She is a rare and interesting doll.
