Here we have a wonderful example of a totally original papier mache doll which has been dressed by Nuns in a French Convent.
I love these dolls.
Nuns dressed all types of dolls during the 19thC but this one is a lovely early example.
She dates from around 1840s.
she has a papier mache shoulder head on cloth body.
She is dressed exactly as the Nuns would have been dressed, every detail is the same including her rosaries and her hidden pockets which contain her hand embroidered handkerchief, also a small handwritten book, all in french I am guessing this was written by the Nun who dressed her.
I have lifted off her headdress to show you her beautiful face and hair which is immaculate ,apart from a bit of damage at the top of her head where the headdress was pinned on.
She measures 12 inches tall.
